EVESHAM Swimming Club duo Adrian Mayhew and James Fletcher headed off to the Hereford Duat-hlon after returning from a hard training camp in Lanzarote.

Both wanted to see how the training would affect them, with the idea for Fletcher to start his build-up for his first attempt at the World Champ-ionships.

As for his clubmate, it was the start of a build-up for the World Firefighter Champion-ships later this year.

The race started with a 5K run and the Vale racers sat just off the leaders coming into the transition area in fifth and sixth in a time of 16.58.

The 30K bike section saw Mayhew produce a strong leg to move up the field with Fletcher only 90 seconds adrift.

Both men were now very tired s a result of their previous exertions and, in the second 5K run, the duo dropped back to finish in what was described as a solid performance with Mayhew fifth and Fletcher ninth.

Fletcher now flies out to Madeira for the Worlds, while his teammate's continued good form has led to a renewed sponsorship with local bike shop Vale Cycles and Cornish wetsuit company Snugg.

Mayhew competed in the Bank Holiday Watford 10K when the weather played its part into making the race a mudbath but he still slipped and slid his way to12th place out off 400 starters.
