AMATEUR theatre groups will be converging on The Vale this Saturday for the regional finals of a national drama competition.

The winners of the competition at Evesham Arts Centre will go on to the finals of the All England Theatre Festival in June.

Vale group, the Bishampton Barnstormers, had been enjoying a run of success with several wins before being knocked out last month.

Festival area secretary Jean Cunnington said: "The standard has been very good this year, the finals in Evesham should be a good day of high quality drama."

The groups competing will be from as far away as Hampshire, Shropshire, Tamworth and Teignmouth. Productions that will be presented are The Donaghue Sisters, A New Woman, Gum and Goo, Three More Sleepless Nights and Without Pity. The first three plays will be performed from 2pm and the remaining two will be presented in the evening session from 7pm.

The winner of the competition will go to the English final in Maidenhead next month before moving on the British finals in Aberystwyth.
