British industry is being dogged by a culture of staying late, with many "company creeps" putting in extra hours simply to please their bosses, according to a new report today.

Fifty per cent of workers said they put in unpaid work while two out of five said they knew someone who arrived in the office early or stayed late to stay in favour with their manager.

Recognition

And most of the 1,000 workers polled by software firm Crown Computing said they doubted even whether working longer hours would lead to more recognition from bosses.

British workers give away the equivalent of £23 bn of free work every year through unpaid overtime, according to recent research from the TUC.

Top of the list are senior civil servants, teachers, farmers and doctors.

Despite longer hours, British workers are less productive than European counterparts who work less, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.
