EXTENSION plans for a service bay at Tesco, St Peter's, have been withdrawn by the store after being recommended for refusal.

The store was considering expanding its storage facilities for a home delivery internet shopping service which would have meant extending its existing service bay on St Peter's Drive, and extending part of the building on to an existing car park used for businesses in Abbotsbury Court.

Mark Pinson-Smith, out-of-hours trading manager for Tesco, St Peter's, addressed some of the issues for the store's decision at a St Peter's Parish Council meeting.

He said one of the reasons was that management believed the alterations would over-develop the store.

Roger Knight, chairman of the parish council, said he was told by Worcester City Council's planning department that extending the service bay would bring it too close to a nearby roundabout.

After last week's meeting, Paul O'Connor, principal planning officer for the city council said the planning department received several letters of objection to the proposals.

He said expanding the building on to the car park behind St Peter's Village Hall would have meant insufficient space for people parking there.

"We were recommending it for refusal, so Tesco decided they were going to withdraw the application to see if there was any opportunity to revise the problems," said Mr O'Connor.

He added that a meeting would take place in the near future to see if the issues could be resolved.

After the meeting, Peter Yates, planning manager for Worcester City Council's planning department, said St Peter's Tesco had submitted a new application, to extend floor space by enclosing the area under the entrance canopy of the store.
