JOHN Brain has admitted he would love more players like Christian Evans.

The 33-year-old flanker confirmed his decision to retire from rugby this week because of family commitments and a niggling back injury but Worcester's director of rugby was sad to see him go.

"I wish I could have 15 players like Christian Evans," said Brain.

"Ultimately, it was Christian's decision to retire because rugby just doesn't fit into his life plan at the moment.

"He's been a very consistent player for me and consistently been our best back row forward over the past two seasons.

"I've rarely seen him have a bad game and I think he's got everyone's respect at the club as a player and as a person.

"We sat down last week, though, and he confirmed to me his retirement plans. We've always had an inkling that he would do that because of his parents' business. He feels he owes it to them to take over and let them retire.

"What I'm pleased about is that Christian is going out on a high. He came here four years ago to help get Worcester into the Premiership and he's done it in his final year."

Brain, though, revealed that he was a little disappointed to lose such a talent with Worcester about to embark on their Premiership challenge.

"I think Christian could play Premiership rugby," added Brain.

"Maybe he would play say every two or three weeks because of the state of his body but he could do a job for us.

"It's always going to be disappointing to lose someone like Christian because he's so consistent but we respect his decision.

"I think he can leave Worcester with his head held high because he has made a vast contribution to the club in his time here."
