Glamorgan Dragons recorded their first victory in the Twenty20 Cup at Cardiff when they romped home by 56 runs against Worcestershire Royals.

Before the match Glamorgan were the only county not to have won a match in this new competition.

But although this game was only of academic interest as the Welshmen could not make any progress they still produced a magnificent performance.

Electing to bat on a good Sophia Gardens wicket Glamorgan totalled 170 in their allotted 20 overs helped by half-centuries from former captain Matthew Maynard and the talented Michael Powell.

Maynard hit 72 off 55 balls which included eight fours and one six while Powell was undefeated on 66 off 40 balls with six fours and two sixes.

Worcestershire, who cannot move into the semi-finals either after losing three out of four matches, were never really in contention as they lost openers Stephen Peters and David Taylor with only eight runs on the board and they did not hit a boundary until the third over.

Ryan Watkins, playing his first senior game for Glamorgan, was in stunning form taking two catches and two wickets.

Kadeer Ali scored a quick 25 off 19 balls for Worcestershire but when he was caught by Maynard off the bowling of Glamorgan captain Robert Croft for 25 it was all over as wickets fell like ninepins.

The visitors were a well beaten side at the close, although Steve Moore finished unbeaten on 34 as they were bowled out for 114 off the last ball of the 19th over.

Watkins took two for eight, Daniel Cherry two for six and Croft three for 32.

Gareth Batty hit 24 for Worcestershire before being bowled by Dean Cosker but Worcestershire, now bottom of the group, can have no grumbles about the result as Glamorgan on the night were the far superior side with several of their players playing starring roles.
