RICHARD Bates has been kept on by Worcester Rugby Club.

The powerful flanker, who made a big impact last season when he was on the pitch, has had the second year of his contract honoured by the club.

Bates, however, struggled with injury and after suffering shoulder problems there were fears that the South African may struggle to play at National One level.

After surgery, though, Bates has recovered well and director of rugby John Brain was happy to keep the 31-year-old on board.

"The club could have terminated his contract," said Brain. "However, all the medical advice we have received tells us that Richard will be able to train and play rugby.

"The club invested a lot of time and effort to get him right so it didn't really make any sense to move him on after that.

"We know what Richard can do when he is playing. He made a big impact last season and he was very unfortunate to pick up the injuries. Richard's rehabilitation following the operation on his shoulder has gone well and he will be fit to start pre-season training when we report back on July 1.

"Richard was understandably concerned about the future when we sat down to talk about the contract. However, we have faith in him. He's a good man to have in the squad."

Meanwhile, wingers Nnamdi Ezulike and Chris Garrard look set to be fit for the new season.

Ezulike underwent an operation on his knee earlier this month while Garrard had surgery to cure a hernia.

"Nnamdi's progressing well," added Brain. "The worst case scenario was three months out and nothing's changed since we had that diagnosis. He should be back mid August.

"Chris Garrard's hernia is sorted now and he will be fit for the new season."
