A FILIPINO tot has gone into hospital for life-saving surgery, thanks to Evening News readers.

Shandy Peralta suffers from hydrocephalus - water-on-the-brain - and would have died without surgery, which started last week.

Nearly £2,000 has been raised since Nenita East launched a campaign to save Shandy, her best friend's 21-month-old nephew, who lives in the village of Impig, Sipocat.

Just £500 is now needed to complete treatment, which will drain the fluid and give him the chance to lead a normal life.

Generous

Shandy's parents, Luisa and Rodel, were at his bedside during surgery.

"They're just so happy," said Philippines-born mother-of-two Mrs East, who has lived in Marlborough Gardens, Malvern, for 14 years.

"When Shandy went into theatre they were on tenterhooks, but also really excited."

Among his generous benefactors is teenager David Phillips, who won the Evening News' Search for a Local Hero for his fund-raising efforts while battling against a heart and lung condition.

Another was the Evesham Journal's Cheryl Tyler, who won a contest at work to win £250 for Shandy's appeal.
