SOLIHULL 2 SWIFTS 1

A first Dr Martens Western Division goal from summer signing Ronnie Sayer failed to maintain Stouport Swifts' winning start to the season.

The former Telford United midfielder rose to head home a Mark Jones cross midway through the second period after coming on as a half-time substitute.

Sayer's equaliser came after Swifts had piled on the pressure, looking for a way back after Solihull had opened up a slender lead going into the interval.

The woodwork twice came to Stourport's rescue in a one-sided opening period to deny Phil Rowe and Stuart Hamilton before Borough took the lead.

Former Bromsgrove favourite Nick Amos climbed to head home a Dave Haywood cross three minutes before half-time.

Home defender Nick Preston thundered a header against the Swifts bar at the start of the second half but this kick-started the visitors and they should have been on level terms on 57 minutes.

Dave Davies helped on a throw-in to Jamie Wood whose header was well blocked by Solihull keeper Mike Payne.

Craig Harris and Richard Ball also went close before Sayer bagged the equaliser on 64 minutes.

But the game then swung back in Solihull's favour with Amos and Preston forcing saves from Lee Evans in the space of a minute before Haywood found the net with a curling effort from 25-yards on 72 minutes.

The impressive Amos sent another header just past the post 12 minutes from time while, at the other end, John Shirley tried his luck with a 25-yard volley only to find keeper Payne blocking his path.
