ANDY Wright hit the winning penalty but keeper Ryan Price was the real shoot-out hero as Stourport Swifts finally clawed their way into the Dr Martens Cup second round.

Swifts had been level at 1-1 with Worcestershire rivals Redditch after extra-time but progressed 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Debutant stopper Price, signed from Rushall, gave Swifts the advantage as he kept out Redditch's opening two penalties from Matty Hall and Nicky Clark.

Mark Jones, Richard Ball, Willie Dunn and Wright all converted their kicks to take Swifts through.

Redditch had looked like breezing into the next round as they dominated the first half.

Lee Ross, Alex Cowley and Jimmy Quiggin all had chances to open the scoring as Swifts struggled to get out of their own half.

But, with four minutes of the half left, Stourport broke the deadlock when Richard Ball collected a Wright pass before firing home his eighth goal in as many games at the second attempt.

Still the Reds pushed forward and Clark fired a shot straight at keeper Price a minute before the break.

Wright went close to adding a second at the start of the second half, turning his shot just wide under pressure from United keeper Richard Anstiss.

But Redditch levelled on 53 minutes when former Swifts winger Cowley's left-wing shot skidded into the net.

Ross then saw an effort turned around the post by Price while, at the other end, Ball thumped a header against the crossbar.

The extra 30 minutes failed to separate the sides although there was a close call for the home side when Steve Hawkes had to clear a Ross header off the line in the 119th minute.

Price's penalty heroics finally clinched victory and a place in the next round.
