STOURPORT Swifts booked a Staffordshire Senior Cup semi-final place after a Kerry Giddings goal saw off a young Stoke City side in a replay.

But it needed Lady Luck to shine on Dave Titterton's side with the 53rd-minute winner arriving from a mistake by visiting keeper Ben Foster at Walshes Meadow.

Mark Jones lofted a high ball into the Stoke area which looked like a straightforward catch for the former Racing Club Warwick keeper only for him to spill it at the feet of skipper Giddings who gratefully slotted home.

The goal stirred the home side into their best football of the match and Jon Hayward blasted over a minute later before Giddings went close to his second.

Midway through the half, the goal-scorer skipped past four players only to slice his shot wide of the mark.

Stoke had forced the replay when powerful striker Jermaine Palmer netted a late equaliser when the sides met in a 2-2 draw last month.

But there was to be no repeat this time as the Swifts defence, led by an inspired display from Craig Webb, kept the Potteries side at bay and earned a semi-final date with Kidsgrove Athletic.

Stoke's best efforts came in the first half when Palmer headed just wide, while Adam Baptist and Jay Denny fired efforts at keeper Ryan Price.

But the pick of the chances came 10 minutes before the break when Baptist darted in behind the defence but was denied by an excellent save from the Stourport stopper.
