JOHN Brain has hailed his new signing at Worcester - Richard Bates!

The Sixways director of rugby felt desperately sorry for the South African last season as he missed most of Worcester's campaign through injury.

However, after Bates' recovery from a January shoulder operation, the back row forward nicknamed 'nutter' will provide a real boost for the squad this season.

"It's like having a new signing," said Brain.

"Richard is back in training and taking part fully. We're just looking forward to him playing again because he's a big crowd favourite and was very unlucky last season with injury.

"He plays with his heart on his sleeve and is a real impact player as a number of sides found out last season. He made a big contribution last season despite him missing much of the season and we are really are excited about him coming back into the team."

Bates made a massive impact in the games he played for Worcester last season, providing the promotion-chasing side with a real physical edge. And with the influx of back row forwards during the summer, Brain has a nice headache ahead of the September 6 National One kick-off at Otley.

"Richard can play eight or six and he provides real competition in a very competitive area," added Brain.

"Mark Gabey, Christian Evans, Drew Hickey and Matt Evans are also similar and when you have Neil Mason, Gavin Pfister and Dean Thomas also fighting for back row places, the players know they will have to be on their game to keep their place.

"It's nice to have those decisions to make, though.

"We certainly have strength in depth throughout the squad but in the back row particularly."
