WERNER Swanepoel is backing Worcester Rugby Club's recruitment drive following John Brain's summer shopping spree.

The Sixways skipper is still recovering from an Achilles injury and hasn't yet been fully involved in training since reporting back to the club for pre-season. However, he's already seen enough to know Worcester are in a better position now than 12 months ago.

"Looking at the players we've brought in, they are certainly at least on a par with the players we already had," said the South African.

"You have to say it looks better than this time last year because of the pedigree of the new players. We always said it was important to keep the existing squad together and supplement that with quality players.

"The management have done that and if you look at the quality of players brought in such as Drew Hickey you have to believe we will improve this season."
