TOMMY Hayes was delighted with his stunning 60-metre penalty which inspired Worcester during their 40-14 victory over Orrell.

The fly-half, who enjoyed a standing ovation from the Sixways crowd following another impressive display, kicked the three points at a vital juncture of the match when Worcester were down to 14 players.

After Neil Lyman's yellow card for his part in a punch-up, Hayes whipped the rug from underneath Orrell's feet with the mammoth effort.

"I fancied it," he said. "Straight away when the penalty was given I fancied it because there was a slight tail wind. I struck it pretty well and was delighted when it went over."

Hayes, though, was keen to pay tribute to the team who worked tirelessly to beat one of their main rivals for this season's National One crown.

"The boys can hold their heads up high after that performance," he added. "It was a tough first-half after a hard week in training. The players stuck to the task and they achieved their goals that were set for them in that second-half.

"Everyone wants a battle with Worcester and you have to be prepared for that.

"That's what we did against Orrell. We gradually got on top of them and in the end we came up trumps."
