KIDDERMINSTER Harriers' new boy Graham Ward has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland's squad for tonight's under-21 clash against Poland.

The talented midfielder's inclusion makes him the first Harriers player to be called up for international duty since the Nationwide League Division Three outfit turned professional in 2000.

Last season John Melligan and Mark Clyde both tasted under-21 action while on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dublin-born Ward, who linked up with Kidderminster on a 12-month contract during the summer after being released by Wolves, received his call up late on Saturday night.

He immediately left for Poland where he has joined up with Don Givens' squad for tonight's friendly.

Harriers' manager Ian Britton said: "Don Givens phoned me on Saturday night to inform me he would like Wardy to join up with his side for the trip to Poland. Obviously, we are delighted for the kid.

"He's done very well since he's been here and, as I've said before, once he gets his chance in the team here I know he's going to be difficult to shift."

Ward has had a gentle introduction to action for Harriers so far this season.

In the opening game against Mansfield Town at Aggborough he went on as a 90th minute substitute for Bo Henriksen.

He made his first full appearance in the Carling Cup clash at Ipswich Town last week and made an 81st minute substitute appearance during Saturday's 2-0 victory at Darlington.

Ward has also been selected for the Republic of Ireland's under-20 squad to play their Czech Republic counterparts on Wednesday, September 3.

Before being signed by Harriers he had attracted the attention of Rushden & Diamonds and Cambridge United, while Bournemouth were also believed to be interested in acquiring his services.

Britton watched Ward playing for Wolves' reserve side on a number of occasions last season and regards him as a player with 'bags of potential'.

The Harriers chief was impressed with him during pre-season training and says: "He's hungry for success and I'm sure when he gets his chance in theside he'll grasp it with both hands'.
