GEORGE Rooney has not given up hope of signing a new striker despite failing to secure the services of three forwards.

The Bromsgrove Rovers boss has seen attempts for one Conference, Dr Martens Premier and a Midland Alliance striker fall by the wayside.

Conference target Norman Sylla, Tamworth's French striker, seems destined to sign for Cambridge City while Hednesford Town's Nathan Lamey does not want to drop down a level.

The third player, former Rover Carl Tranter, currently with Alliance outfit Stourbridge, is staying put because he does not want the travelling commitments.

Rooney though will continue searching. He said: "Over the next few weeks we will try and make one or two additions to the squad."

In the meantime, Peter Sutton has ended his second spell at the club and joined Evesham United, who Rovers play next Tuesday, without a goal to his name this season.

"His (Sutton's) return has been an unhappy time," Rooney said. "He has had no luck in front of goal and I just thought it was frustrating for him and he needed a new start."

With Sutton gone, the boss tried Mark Benbow up front alongside Paul Szewczyk in the 2-1 victory at Cinderford Town last Saturday.

Rooney added: "Mark played up front and did really well without scoring. He was originally a forward so it's not a strange position."

Rovers entertain Swindon Supermarine this Saturday as they attempt to make it three wins from four Dr Martens Western matches and aid their top seven bid.

The boss said: "It's very, very tight with six points covering six clubs. We have got to just look at winning. The boys applied themselves really well on Saturday and got what they deserved."
