THE Waresley site is in a quarry used by neighbours Baggeridge Brick.
It opened eight years ago, with the rubbish filling in the void created by the extraction works.
The site will be temporarily vacated in a couple of years to allow the brick firm to quarry more materials and create new voids before Biffa return about eight years later.
A new landfill site will be opened nearby in the interim period.
The site is fully lined with clay, plastic and soil before the first rubbish is thrown in. It is also subject to strict checks for leaks into groundwater and of gases, and the company is also responsible for leaving the site in good shape once it closes.
Trees and bushes will be planted and one area, around an artificial lagoon, will be improved to provide a wildlife habitat.
The company also retains responsibility for decades after the site closes, added Waresley manager Russ Parrett.
