Do you know I was in the back bar of the Barmaid's Bosom this week and someone mentioned the ancient art of bingo.

I was amazed to hear at least three of the gathering claim they had never been to bingo. Now, I don't just mean 'big' bingo with lots of prizes, but they hadn't been to 'village hall' bingo either. Not even sea-side bingo.

Now I fear these people are missing out on an exciting and enthralling evening, the thrill of winning a dozen eggs for the top line, a bottle of sherry for the middle line, and £15 for a full house (this is village hall bingo of course). I think bingo should be taught in schools.

Now let's be honest, some of our top schools still teach Latin.

Which are we more likely to use or come across in normal everyday life.... Latin, or bingo.

I haven't been to "big bingo" for a long time, and indeed I think the last bingo I went to, I was the "celebrity" caller.

Celebrity or not, if you call those numbers too fast, or two slow, you soon get told.

Now, onto hedge trimming. The man with the big tractor was out cutting hedges this week, and what a top job he made of them.

All round the fields he went, but I thought, what a boring job. I have said before that I'm all for a day on the tractor, bit of mowing or rolling. No phones, no fax machines, no e-mails.

But hedge trimming, you have to concentrate, nod off for a minute and you'll have cut though a telegraph pole, and half the phones in the area will be off.

There are, it appears, all sorts of rules and regulations as well as to when hedges can be cut, so as not to disturb the local bird population, and the shape of the hedge is even recommended. Then there's clearing all the bits off the road as well. I should stick to radio, methinks.

What a great day of rugby tomorrow, three internationals, and all live on the BBC (what a fine organisation)

Armchair, bottle of diet coke, bacon sandwich in between games... better than bingo !

I will have my England shirt on and cross of St George will be flying from the flagpole, which is different to last week when I was flying off the flagpole, did I tell you....
