THE original manuscript of Sir Edward Elgar's orchestral work In The South (Alassio) is on display at the Elgar Birthplace Museum, Lower Broadheath.

The score has been loaned by the Royal Academy of Music and is regarded as one of the composer's most opulent works. The piece was inspired by a winter in Italy and dedicated to Elgar's friend and supporter Leo Frank Schuster.

It was first performed in London in March 1904 at the height of Elgar's fame.

The composer himself conducted the Hall Orchestra for the performance at the three-day Elgar Festival.

The work will be on show until September as part of the exhibition A Life Celebrated, marking the 70th anniversary of Elgar's death.

The museum is open daily from 11am to 5pm. For more information call 01905 333224.
