A YOUNG designer just starting out in business is hoping one day to see his unique furniture in homes across the country.

Lee Morris, a former Dyson Perrins High School pupil, set up Morriarts after a series of unsatisfying jobs.

He now designs and makes furniture to commission from a workshop in Upper Welland.

The 24-year-old, who has an HND in furniture design from Rycotewood College, in Oxford-shire, creates contemporary tables and chairs incorporating computer-generated artwork.

He said he is inspired by music and nature and does not follow the lead of any other designers, preferring to create his own, unique style.

"I'm trying to create something that's original and different. It's contemporary. Not wacky or traditional, but something in between," he said.

As he works alone, he keeps his designs pared-down, to give him time to keep up with running the business.

He said: "I try to keep everything quite simple as I'm a one-man-band and you've got to cut down the amount of time you're working to make any money."

Lee was recently given an Arts Council grant, which he has used to purchase essential equipment such as a table-saw and laminating machine.

It will also fund an exhibition of fine art, sculpture and furniture he has organised.

The exhibition, due to be held at the Swell Gallery in Upper Swell Farm, Stow-on-the-Wold, will feature a selection of Lee's work alongside that of friends, Martin Caulkin, Anne Cherry, Molly Rozier and Caro Sweet.

He said: "All the artists are really good, really professional. It's a showcase of work."

The exhibition runs from April 10 until April 16 and is open from 11am to 6pm.
