PLANS to transform a disused Worcester cinema into an antique dealership with additional housing have met with a mixed response from neighbouring residents.

From asylum centre to a place of worship, a range of ideas has been suggested for the Northwick Cinema in Northwick Road.

Now, architect Sid Glazzard has thrown a £3m project into the hat, which could see the art deco Grade II listed building transformed into a showroom on behalf of new owner Bomers Development.

To help fund the scheme, a 1950s extension behind the building would be demolished. This, along with its parking spaces, would be developed into 23 one and two-bedroom flats with one parking space per flat and some for the antiques centre.

Residents in Coombs Road, where the proposed flats and entrance would be built, have mixed reactions to the proposals.

Pensioner Dorothy Roberts described the site as a "dreadful eyesore" and would be happy for change.

"The cinema has been vandalised over the years and the car park has become a dumping ground for rubbish. It does need to be changed, but I think 23 flats is far too many" she said.

Housewife June Gummery felt the latest suggestion would be a massive boost to the area.

"It would be nice to see something done with the cinema, and I think an antique centre and extra housing is a good idea," she said.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said he felt there was not enough car parking to cope with the proposals.

"Having only one space per person, plus very limited parking for any businesses will undoubtedly force more cars into finding a space in Coombs Road. This is already congested," he said.

The Northwick opened as a theatre in 1938 and it boasts the last intact works by designer John Alexander. It later became a bingo hall, then cinema and was run as a music venue by Worcester businessman Ian Perks from 1991 to 1996. Since then, the building has stood empty.

Architect Mr Glazzard, believes the scheme will restore the building to its former glory and said it would be like a "top London salesroom coming to Worcester".

The bid will be discussed by the city council's planning committee on Thursday, May 6.
