POLICE are investigating a fire in a boys' toilet at a Wyre Forest high school which the headteacher has said was an "irresponsible" prank gone wrong.

Firefighters rushed to Wolverley High School at about 11.30am last Wednesday to tackle the blaze, started in a cubicle on the ground floor of the Sebright Building.

The school's 740 pupils and staff were evacuated after the fire was started during school break-time.

Fire engines from Kidderminster and Bewdley raced to the scene, along with a water carrier. Two police officers later attended.

Head teacher, Kevin O'Regan, said: "It was deliberate in the sense that a toilet roll was set fire to but I don't think it was a deliberate attempt to start a fire."

He added: "It is very much an isolated incident but, with something like this, we have to think about what we can do to prevent a similar incident in the future.

The toilet has been closed following the fire as three of the cubicles were damaged by smoke.

A police spokeswoman said an investigation into the fire was ongoing.
