Peter Slater illustrated "The Wonderful World of Opera" with a selection of recordings featuring solos by sopranos, tenors, baritones and basses; duets and ensemble numbers.
Leading names in the world of opera were heard, including Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Maria Callas, Montserrat Caball, Rosa Ponselle, Lauritz Melchior, Fritz Wunderlich, Carlo Bergonzi, Thomas Allen, Tito Gobbi, Samuel Ramey, Ruggero Raimondi, Ezio Pinza, Juissi Bjorling and Robert Merrill, plus some lesser-known singers such as Mario Sereni, Ben Hepner and Martti Talvela.
The composers chosen were also wide-ranging - Mozart, Giordano, Charpentier, Wagner, Handel, Puccini, Verdi, Leoncavallo, Wagner and Richard Strauss.
On Friday, March 12, Jade Lewis will be "Live at the Library", giving a piano recital in the Beryl Chempin series (formerly known as the Young Musicians series), with music by Bach, Chopin, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Schubert, and Beethoven's "Pathetique Sonata".
