THE Gilbert and Sullivan classic HMS Pinafore, directed by highly acclaimed actor Timothy West and starring Colin Baker, will be performed at the Everyman in Cheltenham.

The popular comic opera is a tale of love, hypocrisy and mistaken identity.

This new production by the internationally acclaimed Carl Rosa Company promises to be entertaining for everyone, whether they're new to opera or die-hard Gilbert and Sullivan fans.

Chaos reigns when the Captain's daughter, Josephine, falls secretly in love with a common sailor after being pledged by her father to marry Sir Joseph Porter, played by Colin Baker.

The production, which features classic songs like I'm Called Little Buttercup, When I Was A Lad and I am the Captain of the Pinafore, is a feast for the eyes and ears.

The action takes place on the quarterdeck of the HMS Pinafore, which has been stylishly designed, complete with a three-tiered cabin, rigging, steam funnel, sails and an ocean view backdrop.

The costumes feature authentic Victorian designs, with men in traditional blue and white sailor suites and ladies adorned with bustles, dainty hats and glittering evening gowns.

The sets and costumes have been designed by leading film designer Christine Edzard, who has worked on BBC period dramas and feature films like the Oscar-winning film Little Dorrit.

Timothy West, who has just completed a stint in the title role of King Lear, will make his debut in the world of Gilbert and Sullivan with this production.

HMS Pinafore runs at the Everyman until Saturday and tickets, priced from £8 to £23, are available from the box office on 01242 572573.
