A BIZARRE incident ensured Cleobury Mortimer seconds remain unbeaten in 2004 after a 22-22 draw at Ludlow thirds.

Most of the players thought Ludlow had converted their second try but the referee disagreed and ruled Cleobury were level on points.

Though desperate Cleobury defence kept the eager forwards at bay for a while, it was not long before the home side managed two tries.

Both appeared to be converted but the referee later claimed only the first was successful which ended up saving Cleobury.

Their response at the time was immediate as they pulled back a try though Paul Hulland but Ludlow added a breakaway score on the left wing.

Cleobury hit back again before half-time when prop Andrew Davies scampered over though Kevin Shields' conversion hit the post.

They applied more pressure but conceded a fourth try out wide which went unconverted.

A spilled catch from Shields' up-and-under set the pattern as the villagers clawed the score back.

John Hulland nipped in to score and Rob Kirton added a fourth try following good work by Nick Lewis and Nigel Williams.

Shields converted the latter and shaved the post with a last-gasp penalty.
