POLICE are urging residents to be extra vigilant after two pensioners were targeted by conmen on the same day.

In the first incident, two men called at the home of an elderly woman in Yazor Road, Hereford, at around 11.40am last Friday.

They tried to talk their way into her home saying they were there to look at the water.

However, the wily pensioner slammed the door and the men left, heading towards Sheriden Road.

Police say they are not connecting the first incident to a similar one that took place an hour later in Mayberry Avenue.

An elderly woman opened her door to a man who said there was a problem with her neighbour's water.

False claims

He went into her house and left a short time later heading towards Ross Road. Although it is believed nothing was stolen, his claims that there had been a water problem were false.

In the Yazor Road incident, both men were white and one was of medium build, aged over 20 and wearing a blue-green three-quarter length coat and dark woolly hat.

His accomplice was of medium build with dark hair and was wearing a three-quarter length navy coat.

In the second incident, the conman is described as being white, around five feet seven inches tall, of slim build and around 50 to 60 years old. He had white hair and was wearing a brown jacket.

Identify

Police believe a second man, seen hurrying down Mayberry Avenue, was also involved.

He was white, aged between 30 and 40, about five feet six inches tall with dark, short curly hair and wearing a black suit and white shirt.

"We would urge anyone who is in any doubt about the identity of a caller to close their door and call police," said PC Neil Finch, of Hereford police station.

He appealed to anyone with any information about either incident to contact him on 08457 444888 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
