A BIDFORD group which not only offers youngsters fun and friendship but also the chance to learn about saving their own and others' lives is inviting new members to join up.

Bidford-on-Avon Young Firefighters Association is a new group which has been formed in partnership with Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

It accepts children from any backgrounds, from 11-17, and offers an Open College Network of Central England (OCNCE) training course among other qualifications.

Once they reach 17, they then become senior young firefighters, allowing them to train and qualify as lay instructors when they reach 18.

Every young firefighter has the opportunity to progress through the ranks, becoming a leading young firefighter in charge of a watch or even a sub officer.

The Bidford branch was officially opened on October 2 after a setting-up and recruitment process.

A spokesman said: "We currently have 12 youngsters, both male and female.

"We're always looking to expand the group and we'd like to invite any youngsters who are interested to come to see the station on a drill night which is every Thursday, apart from during school holidays.

"Some of the activities the Bidford youngsters will be getting up to this year include a bag pack at Budgens on Saturday, March 6, from 9am-3pm, home fire safety visits to the elderly, demonstrations at Salford Priors fete, Bidford Fire Station open day and attending a national camp.

"They'll also be doing other fund-raising activities in and around Bidford which will help raise cash for other good causes in the village."

Anyone interested in learning more about the group can call Richard on 01789 490517 or 07813 105257 or go along to the station on a Thursday evening.
