REDNAL residents will have to travel miles to draw out their savings or buy a stamp following plans to axe two of the village's Post Offices.

Post Offices at Edgewood Road and Bristol Road South have been earmarked for closure as part of a scheme to reduce the number of branches in cities across the country.

If the closure goes ahead the nearest Post Offices will be in Northfield and Rubery.

Beacon Hill resident, Brian Kite said: "Local people are very worried about these closures as it will then be a considerable distance between other Post Offices, especially for pensioners."

However, Paul Maize, the Post Office's head of area said all of the proposals for closures have not been made without considerable research.

"All of the branches we propose to close are poorly used, have suffered from under investment and many are located in premises that are too small," he said.

"In each case the subpostmaster is unable to invest in the branch because of lack of profit available from running the business.

"There are reasonable public transport links, many of, which are direct, to at least one of the alternative branches located in much more vibrant shopping areas."

He added that there would be a six-week consultation period where concerned residents would be given the chance to have their say.

Rednal residents were set to voice their views when they protest outside the Bristol Road South Post Office this morning (Wednesday).

Recently the Advertiser/Messenger revealed that the Post Office counter at the One Stop Shop in Marlbrook was also set for closure. The Old Birmingham Road shop is to be taken over by Tesco, which has stated they will not continue the Post Office service.

Speaking about this closure town MP Julie Kirkbride said: "It's clearly very disappointing that the people in Marlbrook are to loose this Post Office because Tesco believes they have insufficient space to accommodate it."
