POLICE and councillors can now ban groups of people from parts of the town - thanks to new legislation.

Section 30 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act provides the power to disperse groups of two or more people who are intimidating or harassing others in a public place.

Imprisonment

A police superintendent or above can agree with Wychavon District Council to ban those responsible from an area for a designated period of time.

Offenders who ignore the ban can face a fine or three months imprisonment.

A police spokesman said: "There are no immediate plans to use Section 30, but it is a possibility that we will do so in the future."

Gangs of hooligans have recently been causing trouble in Droitwich town centre.

The police have already recorded 56 calls in one week from concerned members of the public.
