Alcester 54

Old Wheatleyans 10

ALL three Alcester sides were involved in high scoring games but only the first XV managed a win.

In another break from Warwickshire One action the first XV turned in a much improved display to see off a largely lacklustre Wheats side, currently riding high in Warwickshire Two.

Alcester started well and were two tries up inside five minutes through centre Brett Allard and scrum half Robbie Parker with full back Richard Smith converting both.

Parker was revelling in the ball provided by his pack and the space afforded to him by the visitors' defence and his pace proved to be a constant thorn in Wheats side.

He doubled his tally midway through the half and Alcester looked set to return a huge total - threatening the visitors' line at will.

But they had to settle for just one further score in the half through Keith Beech. Smith again converted to maintain a 100 per cent kicking record.

With Wheats already disrupted through injuries at the break they were forced to bring players who had retired hurt back to the game to replace other walking wounded.

But Alcester continued applying pressure with inspirational lock forward and man of the match Andy Flynn the main provider at the front of the lineout and it was following another good take that Parker scored his hat trick try. Smith again converted.

Alcester's fitter side were moving the play around well and their ball retention between backs and forwards was good creating a number of openings.

Prop John Squires turned provider for two of the next three tries, releasing the final pass for Beech's second try and for scrum half Parker's fourth.

In between times 19-year-old flanker Birks crossed for his maiden 1st XV score, capping a great performance before Wheats had put themselves on the score board.

And it was the visitors who had the last word with a second try, although Alcester finished the game with fourteen players as Brett Allard left the field as a precaution, with a number of minor injuries.
