HEREFORD United and Kidderminster Harriers were among clubs paying tribute to legend John Charles at his funeral.

Several of the players who played under Charles during his four-year stint as player-manager at Edgar Street from 1967-71 were among the mourners at yesterday's service at Leeds Parish Church.

Harriers manager Jan Molby also attended as did the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Denis Law, Jack and Sir Bobby Charlton, Wales manager Mark Hughes and captain Gary Speed, and other past and present stars from his former clubs Leeds United and Juventus.

The hearse was then driven to Elland Road for a memorial service.

Leeds caretaker boss Eddie Gray paid an emotional tribute to the man known as 'The Gentle Giant', after which the club announced that the West Stand -- which was rebuilt with the money made from his move to Juventus -- is to be renamed the John Charles Stand.

Charles, who died last week aged 72, was one of the greatest footballers of his generation and won 38 caps for Wales.

He was cremated in a private ceremony and his ashes will be scattered in his home town of Swansea.
