A WEST Midlands Euro MP warns haulage companies face crippling costs and bureaucratic meddling if a forthcoming transport directive slips through.

Tory Philip Bradbourn highlighted two ways the Directive on Driving Licences would hurt truckers and delivery drivers.

First, the weight limit for medium vehicles would be reduced from 7.5 to just six tonnes, forcing transport firms to cut the amount of goods they can carry. Drivers would also be forced to apply for a medium weight vehicle licence before a heavy one.

"Thousands of people in the West Midlands work in the transport and haulage industry, and many depend on efficient, economical transport, to survive" said Mr Bradbourn.

speaking from the European Parliament.

"This is a completely unnecessary and bureaucratic proposal.

"British drivers are amongst the safest in the world yet this piece of EU nonsense, which is designed for drivers from countries with poorer safety records, will simply add to costs to local industry."
