ALCESTER Town Council is pressing for more CCTV for the town centre.

Councillors have been discussing how to go about getting more cameras for Henley Street and Gashouse Lane.

The council contributes to the running costs of the three CCTV cameras which have been in the town centre since 2000.

Stratford Council installed the surveillance system, which cost £125,000 four years ago, and which keeps 24-hour surveillance on hotspots.

Alcester Town Council clerk Derrick Ward said: "We decided to write to Stratford Council inquiring about the situation of the existing system and will be asking what is in the pipeline to improve the facilities for Alcester."

Alcester police and the town's neighbourhood watch scheme have both said how much CCTV does help in tackling crime and antisocial behaviour.

One way in which the scheme could be improved could be to get town businesses involved in the scheme.

Councillors decided last year to ask all the town's firms if they would be interested in conributing money to help pay for the extra service as it would be for the benefit of the whole town.

But the idea had a negative response with just a handful of businesses saying they would be interested.

Another sticking point for the cameras could be lighting, as Gashouse Lane particularly would need much improved street lighting before any cameras could be installed.
