AS we know to horrendous effect, the roads of Britain are now crammed with millions of cars and other motor vehicles, but it's all a far cry from the highway scene a century ago when genuine horse-power was still the most widely used form of transportation.
However, the automobile was fast emerging in 1904 as the eventual replacement for the four-legged form of propulsion.
Berrow's Journal for this early week of 1904 reported; "The latest estimate is that there are already 10,000 motor-cars upon our roads, and 10,000 more are in the course of construction in this country.
"And these estimates would seem to be accurate judging by the fact that the Automobile Associatilready boasts 2,600."
