The National Blood Service is urging people to give hospital patients the best Christmas present they will ever receive: the gift of life.

The demand for blood never stops and in the West Midlands alone, hospitals require 1,000 units a day.

However, only six per cent of the population are active blood donors, and the NBS is keen to recruit new blood donors.

Blood is in even greater demand over Christmas and the new year, due to a reduced number of donation sessions.

NBS spokesman Lyndsay Stewart said: "Before the year is up we need to ensure that our stocks are high so that many more lives can be saved.

"We urge both existing donors and potential donors to put 'give blood' at the top of their wish list this Christmas or to note it as the number one new year's resolution. Please make a special effort this Christmas."

To register as a donor or get information about the blood service call the national helpline on 08457 711 711.

The next blood donation session will take place in Malvern Youth Centre on Albert Road North on January 14, followed by a session in Malvern Rugby Club, Spring Lane, on January 29.
