AN all-star jazz line-up will be bringing some

post-New Year entertainment to Inkberrow during a charity evening.

The Alan Barnes Quartet will be playing at new music venue The Bull's Head in January next year in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The event, which will be attended by The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Gareth Jones, has been organised by the newly formed group Inkberrow Jazz.

"There is not much jazz in this part of the world. This is a very quiet corner of Worcestershire, so it is something new for the village and the area,"

said Geoff Matthews, chairman of Inkberrow Jazz.

"People can expect some of the finest jazz in the country.

"The Alan Barnes Quartet play mainstream modern jazz - they are nice tunes, but not in the traditional New Orleans style. It's top stuff."

The Alan Barnes Quartet consist of, not surprisingly, Alan Barnes, who is on saxophones and clarinet, David Newton on piano, Matt Miles on double bass and Sebastiaan de Krom on drums.

Alan has dominated the UK jazz scene in recent years in the alto and baritone sax sections.

For 10 years, he has broadcast regularly with the BBC Big Band and Radio Orchestras, and he is a regular face in the Laurie Holloway band on Parkinson.

He is also a writer and arranger and has just launched his own Woodville record label.

David graduated from Leeds College of Music, along with Alan, with whom he has enjoyed a

20-year musical collaboration.

He now leads his own trio and tours and records with vocalist Stacey Kent.

Bassist Matt is in demand on the London jazz scene and a regular at Ronnie Scott's jazz club.

Belgium-born Sebastiaan is seen and heard on TV, radio and stage with vocalist Jamie Cullum.

He has recently appeared on BBC4 with Guy Barker.

The Inkberrow event, which takes place on Thursday, January 15, is sponsored by kitchen and bathroom studio Blacks of Inkberrow.

Pub manager Andrew Seward decided to hold the event when approached by the firm's Roger Black.

"I have been a jazz enthusiast for many years and always seem to have to travel miles to hear my kind of music," said Andrew.

The night is a ticket-only event and starts at 8pm.

Tickets are £18 each, from John Taylor on 01386 793171 between 9am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
