RESIDENTS in Hereford's St Nicholas Ward will be asked to "make a note to post their vote" early next year in the second postal ballot to be held in Herefordshire.

Following the resounding success of a postal ballot in this year's local election held in May - in which nearly 60 per cent of people voted - Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has granted Herefordshire Council permission to run the forthcoming by-election in the same manner.

The by-election has been called following the recent death of Councillor Rev David Short, MBE. It leaves a seat free in the St Nicholas Ward on both Herefordshire Council and the parish of Hereford City Council.

Both these seats will be voted for during the by-election and it means around 5,000 ballot papers will be dropping through electors' letterboxes from Friday, January 9.

These ballot papers will have to be completed and posted back by Monday, January 19, to ensure they arrive in time to be counted.
