Two former lovers broke down in tears as they were cleared at Worcester Crown Court of sex offences involving girls aged 12 and 14 more than a decade ago.

A jury of seven women and five men was out for nine-and-a-half hours before bringing in not guilty verdicts against Christopher Howley and Susan Morris.

The pair admitted having an affair in the early 1990s but denied this had involved three-in-a-bed sex sessions or other sex offences.

Howley, aged 48, formerly of Leawood Grove, Kidderminster, and now living in Burton Latimer, Northants, was found not guilty of three charges of rape, one of indecency with a child, two indecent assaults, one of taking indecent photographs and one of administering a drug with intent to commit indecent assault.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on two charges of indecent assault and two of indecency with a child.

Morris, aged 47, of Dovedale Avenue, Willenhall, was cleared of two charges of aiding and abetting rape and two of aiding and abetting indecent assault.

During the trial, Howley described the allegations as "fantasy, absolute trash" and said events described by the girls, now in their 20s, never happened.

Morris maintained the girl who made the allegations had a history of attention-seeking and lying.
