IN response to Mr Lewis (You Say, Thursday, October 2) it would appear that the only person making "spurious" comments is Mr Lewis.

His imputation that I have been "blaming the ills of society on a minority" is fatuous!

The Evening News wouldn't allow any correspondent to blame the "... ills of society on a minority". Such a statement would, I believe, fall within the provisions of anti- racism legislation.

As regards the National Statistical Office website, a month ago it had a notation on its "population statistics," which said that they were subject to revision, apparently because (millions of?) census forms hadn't been returned.

In addition, a recent newspaper report says "... a probe has begun into the NSO after a string of embarrassing foul-ups".

Doesn't that make its data flawed?

If the growth in our population is due to births, why was the Press recently reporting that our population had gone up by two million in 10 years, because of migration? That's the equivalent of 20 "Worcesters."

I consider that more significant than the rest of Mr Lewis's letter, apart from his comment about "internal migration," which is driving demand for commuter home developments (around our city) and transforming cities like Birmingham into centres of ethnic population, as well as clogging major roads with ever-increasing commuter traffic.

I don't care how deeply Mr Lewis reaches into his compendium of contempt - I think its time someone had the guts to stand up and articulate the views of the majority, who now want migration severely restricted
