Children at the Wyche Primary School in Malvern Wells donned their paper moustaches last week to join in the fun of the Elgarthon.

As well as sporting replicas of Elgar's trademark facial hair, children were invited to perform Elgar's rousing Land of Hope and Glory during the week-long event.

The school has an historic link with the song, as children there are believed to have given its first public performance, as a trial run for the composer.

The Elgarthon, supported by schools across the country, marked the launch of the Coins 4 Notes appeal to raise money for the Elgar Birthplace Museum, in Broadheath, and the Sargent's Music Therapy Programme, to help children with cancer communicate through music.

Headteacher Geoff Rutherford said: "The Elgarthon went extremely well, the children really enjoyed it. So far, we've raised more than £300.

"It's an opportunity for the school to raise money for two very worthy causes and to recreate a little of the school's own history for the children here at the present."
