EXPERTS have been called in to report on possible pollution to land in Pickersleigh Road, ahead of its planned use as the location for a new health centre.

Malvern Hills District Council is offering to sell two acres of its former maintenance depot to South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust. The trust wants a deal signed before the end of March, to build a new health centre to replace the surgery in Court Road, Barnards Green, and the Malvern Health Centre in Victoria Park Road.

The depot site is a former gasworks and MHDC will have to assess possible contamination of the land before it can sell it. The deal is part of a chain, relying on the trust fulfilling promises to build a new hospital at Seaford Court in Malvern Link.

It is also reliant on the council identifying a new depot site. Talks about acquiring land are under way between a working party of council representatives and external advisors.

The working party will be investigating uses for two and a half acres of the site that will not be occupied by the health centre.

Council leader Tom Wells said: "We've yet to produce recommendations for the residual part of the site.

"We've talked about a community facility, or we might sell off the land for a mixed development of affordable and market price housing."
