A scheme to reduce traffic congestion outside the gates of Welland Primary School was officially launched yesterday (Thursday).
Fifteen children took advantage of the new 'walking bus', which was given a successful trial run last week.
The scheme was run by four parent volunteers, who picked children up at various stops around the village and walked them to school as a group.
Safety officers from Worcestershire County Council accompanied headteacher Jill Callaghan for the launch of the scheme, which could be extended to other schools.
Mrs Callaghan said: "It's fantastic that the scheme is functioning permanently. The trial run went well, I was pleasantly surprised at the number of children who joined in.
"Parents commented that the traffic congestion was less and the children seemed to really enjoy chatting to their friends on the way, too."
The walking bus will operate two mornings a week to begin with, although the aim is to increase its frequency in the future.
County councillor Alwyn Davies, spokesman for the environment and sustainability, who attended the launch and handed out goody bags to the children involved, said: "I'm delighted to be part of this campaign. It provides a safe, secure environment for children to walk to school, as well as reducing traffic congestion.
"Hopefully, other schools will see this success story and take up the initiative. It's something we're keen to introduce across the county."
