THE £8.5m construction of a modern apartment complex, on the site of a former 19th Century hotel, has entered its final stages.

Aspects of the original Worcestershire Brine Baths Hotel have been retained in the new housing initiative, including the bell tower, weather vane and the more mature trees.

And the project, in St Andrew's Road, Droitwich, has tried to maintain a traditional style of architecture to remain sympathetic with the town's existing buildings.

However, the 96-unit development also offers a "contemporary focal point", which has proved a hit with house-hunters.

Around 65 of the two-bedroom apartments have already been snapped up, at prices around the £143,995 mark.

"It appeals to everyone, from young professionals who aspire to luxury apartment living, empty nesters relocating, and retired couples that want to be right in the heart of town," said sales and marketing director of George Wimpey, Roger Northam.

The development is called The Worcestershire in memory of the hotel - which was built in 1891 by the town's pioneer, John Corbett - but had stood derelict for the past 20 years.

And the scheme has become building firm George Wimpey's largest apartment project in the West Midlands.

The show apartment, on St Andrew's Road, is open seven days a week from 10am to 5.30pm, on Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5.30pm on Sunday. Telephone 01905 827347 for details.
