A PLUCKY youngster who recovered from a diving accident is joining his brother and sister to swim the width of the Channel - in Worcester!

Ten-year-old Matt Watts is completing the 22 miles during regular sessions at two of the city's swimming pools with Tom, aged 12, and Hannah, eight.

The trio were attracted to the challenge, in aid of spinal injuries charity Aspire, after Matt crashed into the shallow end of a pool while diving on holiday two years ago.

"Matt had a spinal injury- he was very close to being wheelchair-bound. His back bent against its normal angle," explained mum, Sue.

"We saw the poster in the swimming pool and, as they swim regularly anyway, we thought it would be a good way of raising as much money as possible."

Now Matt has made a full recovery, the three, of Heron Grange, Warndon, Worcester, are turning their attention to completing the Channel challenge as many times as possible, with Tom already completing the distance.

The trio are well-equipped to fulfil their fund-raising aims - they all go swimming twice a week, Hannah won the under-8s girls swimming competition in Worcester last year, while Tom and Matt are third and fourth in the Great British junior biathlon rankings.
