I FEEL the time has come for someone to reply to your various correspondents who have commented on the speed cameras in City Walls Road and elsewhere.

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Motor Industry, the dealer principal of a very large car dealership, and a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. So I guess you could say that I have a greater interest in cars than the average person.

It therefore behoves me to pass the following comments.

1. The speed limit is a matter of law and is not negotiable. It is enforced by the police who themselves have some of the best-trained drivers in the world. These drivers spend their professional lives seeing the results of accidents caused in many cases by speeding drivers and I know that many of these accidents involve children and have very unpleasant consequences for all involved.

2. The difference between 30 and 40 miles per hour can, and frequently does, mean the different between life and death, particularly for children. Please remember that the speed limit is set to protect others and not just the driver.

3. People who cannot drive safely and look at instruments at the same time should not be allowed to drive.

4. We kill 4,500 people on the roads each year and the police are doing the right thing by spending time protecting us from this carnage as well as from the common criminal who actually kills very few people in comparison with the car drivers of this country.

5. We do not excuse people who break the law in any other area of our lives, so why do we plead for the speeder? It might be one of us who gets killed or injured.

In the light of all this could we please stop bleating about speed cameras in City Walls Road or anywhere else and get on with driving in a skilful, responsible and law-abiding way.

COLIN MAPP, Droitwich.
