JUDGING by his or her letter (You Say, Saturday, October 4) I realise that R A Lane lacks any real knowledge of coursing.
The object of coursing is to test the greyhound and not, as is often thought, to kill the hare. Greyhounds are never allowed to course a passing hare which might possibly be considered unfit.
The hare is coursed freely in its natural environment, it is definitely not released from a cage. At every meeting, a National Coursing Club Inspector must be present. Their first duty is to ensure the hare has every means of escape - at the slightest infringement of this rule, coursing will immediately be stopped.
