PLANS for a crematorium at Astwood, Worcester received a major boost at this time 50 years ago.
The Journal reported in October 1953: "The erection of a crematorium at Astwood Cemetery to cater for the county was put forward in a statement issued by the City Council this week.
"Notification has been received that the Minister of Housing and Local Government is prepared to consider the proposal of the City Council to build a crematorium, and he has requested the submission of plans of the site and building for approval.
"The City Council has been endeavouring since 1944 to provide a crematorium but the Minister has been unable to consider the matter previously because of the restrictions on capital expenditure and the use of very limited building materials.
"There is at present no crematorium in Worcestershire, the nearest being at Birmingham and Cheltenham.
Districts
"The proposed crematorium will be able to serve the city and surrounding districts, and Worcester is well placed in this respect being within easy reach of all parts of the county. The City Council has the support of the County Council and most of the other local authorities in Worcestershire for its scheme."
