I AM sorry to see Mike Foster (You Say, Friday, October 3) once again trying to divert the debate about Worcestershire's education funding into party politics.

As our county has done badly under both Conservative and Labour governments, this is an issue on which we should be able to unite.

Sadly, instead of enthusiastically supporting the cross- party campaign, Mr Foster always tries to blame others.

First, he blamed schools for having reserves that were too large - and was proved wrong.

Then he blamed the county council for not passing on enough money to schools - and was proved wrong.

Now he tries to blame me for not supporting more money for our schools - again he is wrong.

His solution is for the county council to put up council taxes even more than they have already been forced to by the rotten deal we get from the Government.

We are paying more for local services than Birmingham as it is - how much higher does he think our council taxes should be before we can get the fair deal we deserve?

Worcestershire County Council is already spending more than the Government says it should on our schools - and all praise to them for that.

If they put up council taxes more, pensioners and others on fixed incomes would be really hurt - and anyhow, as the Government gets into a panic about council tax levels, it's not even clear they would allow the further increases.

Come on Mike - stop blaming others and make a wholehearted commitment to a campaign we must win, for the sake of all the county's children.

PETER LUFF, House of Commons.
