WENDY Hands (You Say, Friday, October 3) says she personally cannot see that EU policy is being driven by Socialists. I find this odd.

Until four years ago, the Socialists had for 20 years been the largest political grouping in the European Parliament. In 1999, 13 of the 15 Member States had left-wing Governments, and they in turn appointed left-wing Commissioners.

So in each of the EU institutions, there have been Socialists tamely agreeing with other Socialists that whatever the problem, more one-size-fits-all legislation was the answer. It isn't.
