Hanley Castle High School will echo to the sound of music courtesy of the Pete Allen Jazz Band.

The band, celebrating its 25th year, remains at the top of the UK traditional jazz scene and has appeared at festivals and venues worldwide.

Born in Newbury, Pete Allen worked with his father's band as a clarinettist and saxophonist from 1971. After spending three years in the police force and working with bands in the West Country, Mr Allen returned to Newbury and took over leadership of his father's band, which made its debut under his name in 1978.

Mr Allen himself has appeared as a guest solo artist at the Dixieland Jazz Festival in Sacramento, USA, and was awarded honorary citizenship of New Orleans for his services to jazz music.

The performance on Friday, October 17, at 8pm, will be the fourth of six concerts at Hanley Castle High School in a series presented by the Friends of the Upton Jazz Festival. Tickets are £10 (members £8) from Paul Lawrence on 01684 593794.

The Scott Hamilton Quartet will be at the school on November 14, with the Dave Donahoe Jazz Band Christmas Party on December 13.
